COMPLICATIONS

EYE DISEASE

  • Diabetic eye disease affects the blood vessels in the retina.
  • Watch out for :
      • Eye sight becoming blur
      • Seeing floating spots or shadows
      • Having trouble seeing at night
  • See your doctor immediately

NERVE DAMAGE

  • High blood glucose damages nerves in the arms, hands, legs and feet
  • Watch out for:
      • Numbness (pins and needles)
      • Loss of feeling in the feet
      • Tingling and burning sensation
      • Muscle weakness
  • Prevention with good blood glucose control, regular exercise and quit smoking
POOR BLOOD CIRCULATION IN THE FEET

  • Due to damage to blood vessels in the legs and feet
  • Watch out for:
      • Cramps in the legs while walking
      • Cold feet
      • Pain in the legs while at rest
  • Poor blood circulation slows down healing of wounds and infection
GANGRENE

  • Usually begins as a wound or ulcer in the feet
  • Poor blood circulation and lack of proper wound care leads to infection
  • Amputation is needed to remove the dead tissues.
  • Take good care of your feet
